Accommodation options in the outer islands are often limited to village resthouses . These may be available for visitors on prior arrangement. However, these properties have not been established with international visitors in mind. As such the standards, furnishings, maintenance and facilities are unlikely to meet the normal expected standards of accommodation. Similarly the quality and variety of food offered may be of a standard that is, to some, unacceptable. These considerations must be born in mind if you wish to visit the outer islands.
On some outer islands there are some private operators who have developed or are developing accommodation more suited to visitors. Notably on Abemama, Butaritari and Abaiang.
The I-Kiribati often try to cater to what they think visitors would prefer, ie western style food / accommdoation etc but it is usually the case that local offerings would be more preferable.
